One destination, several routes
With SAP ECC mainstream maintenance ending, most SAP customers are planning their move to S/4HANA. The destination is the same, but the right route depends on how well your current system fits your business, how much custom code you carry and how much change your organisation can absorb at once.
The three main paths
- Greenfield (new implementation). Start fresh with standard S/4HANA processes and migrate only the data you need. Best when processes have drifted from best practice or the old system is heavily customised.
- Brownfield (system conversion). Convert your existing system, keeping configuration, history and custom developments. Best when your processes still serve you well and you want a faster, lower-risk move.
- Selective data transition. A hybrid that combines a new or converted system with a selective move of data, company codes or history. Useful for mergers, carve-outs and phased roll-outs.
Questions that decide the route
How much of your custom code is still used, and is it S/4-compatible?
Do you need full transaction history in the new system?
Can the business absorb process change alongside the technical move?
Keep the core clean
Whichever path you take, migration is the ideal moment to retire unused custom code, rebuild what you still need with ABAP RAP and CDS, and move extensions to SAP BTP. A clean core makes every future upgrade faster and cheaper.
